Syllabus

This module is the third out of three ESD and STEAM Teacher Training modules. We have designed this module to take your professional development as a teacher on step further! You will be trained to teach about materials, product life-cycles, consumption and carbon issues.

Unit 1: Focus on the basic materials around us in our daily lives!
This socio-constructivist, story-based and challenge-based lesson will help you lead and encourage the students to discuss about materials (also unknown!) around us: names, properties, origin and use

Unit 2: Solve the problem of recycling! This inquiry- and problem-based lesson supports students’ system thinking skills as they categorize their own ideas of circular economy solutions - in our daily life. The focus is on life-cycles of products: origin, use and recycling options. The student-centered approach stimulates asking questions.

Unit 3: How is my daily life related to climate change?
This phenomenon- and inquiry-based lesson begins with repeating and rehearsing the basics of climate change. The goal is to better understand one’s own consumption and scales of different types of daily-life action possibilities.

Unit 4: Let’s take action together
This action-based lesson focuses on the personal preferences and passions in making the World a better place. Students practice formulating an argument and presenting it to others.

What our participants say of this module

"I think it is a good wake-up call for the students to see this. So many times we come across the thinking that "it must be economically worth it!", but the real cost is actually unknown to the buyer and and a lot of times to the producer. "Business is business" is the thinking. I think this will help the students to understand what REAL economy is about."

***

"I think circular solutions should be made a compulsory part of our school curriculum so that everyone understands the importance of recycling. Also it should be practically implemented for better understanding."

***

"Teaching this lesson...I feel as teachers, we stand at the forefront of educating the next generation of global citizens that will ensure a healthier and safer living standards using LCA"

***

"This lesson supports the students to develop their leadership, observation and critical analysis skills.Students able to utilize them for life long learning"

***

"An amazing way to teach students, observation, staying at here and now, critical thinking and it's going to be a fun activity as well. Besides that, it increases the awareness about how we live, what mayerials we use and what we do with the materials we have. It will help them to see how they can use more eco friendly materials also"

***

"The learners in my class connected with the story and it turned into a discussion where awareness of the situation was fostered and different suggestions on how they could help to protect our
environment"

***

"This lesson will help children develop observation skills. I feel post this lesson they will notice the things around them more keenly than before. They will start questioning what it is made of, it's use, nature, is it eco-friendly or not etc. These kind of activities make them more inquisitive about the world around them."

***

"From the beginning it was difficult to explain what materials to find. Then, after sharing my own example with them, things went much better. This activity truly, makes us think about things which we use everyday but never pay attention why to use, what for.......So, collaboration and critical thinking skills are being developed in this lesson. A marvellous lesson!"

***

"This lesson teaches children to think critically. Kids will have fun with this too. This method also helps to develop the general knowledge of the children"

***

"Very important to develop thinking skills in students, by asking questions on reflexions will help them to develop this skill, and provoque a feeling for taking actions for sure."

Learning outcomes

During this module you will:

  • you will learn to apply 4 phenomenon-based and student-centered learning examples in your own teaching.
  • you will learn to teach about materials that we use on an everyday basis and about various aspects associated to production, transportation, consumption and wastes after use
  • you will learn about applying systems thinking skills in action-based climate lessons
  • you will learn about how story-based lesson plans can make the learning more fun and inspiring

At the end of this module:

You will get the skills and concrete tools for including and applying four new sustainable development lessons typical to Finland into your own teaching! These lessons work as projects as well.

In order to get your training certificate, you will have to test each lesson plan and send in a workbook you fill in together individually or with your school team. This must include photos of the implementation of the four lesson plans in your school or with your students. The workbook will be a collection of your reflections, insights and photos - you do this for yourself and your teaching.

EduGems lessons are high-quality and research-based combining Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths with Sustainability and 21st Century Skills.

A story-based curriculum

To make the learning process more fun and engaging, and to support children’s motivation and passion for studying, EduGems Finland has created a story-based curriculum where the arctic owl Gem guides the children through a Quest for the ”Gems of Knowledge”. Gem the owl is challenging the children to find out ways to stay sustainable in this changing world of ours. You will meet Gem the Owl in Circular Solutions Module 3 and EcoDesign Module 4.
