Syllabus

This module is one of the advanced final ESD and STEAM Teacher Training modules. We have designed this module to strengthen the student-centred approach in your teaching! Get new skills how to apply fun EcoDesign and green chemistry thinking to science education.

Unit 1: Urban planning - Build an ecohouse prototype and model a whole ecotown!
This socio-constructivist, story-based and problem-based lesson will help you lead and encourage the collaborative creation process of the students. The goal is to make them critically and creatively think through the features of urban planning: energy, water management, food production and much more.

Unit 2: Let’s make bioplastic!
This phenomenon- and story-based lesson supports students’ systems thinking skills as they learn about the life-cycles of different types of plastics: origin, use and recycling options. The student-centered approach stimulates communication and action skills.

Unit 3: What are the colours of my daily life?
This phenomenon-based lesson enables the students to create natural dyes. The goal is to better understand the additive substances in various products. Could we ecodesign them to be more biodegradable?

Unit 4: Project work: Let’s get creative and design a natural cosmetic consumer product!
This project- and challenge-based lesson focuses on designing eco-friendly cosmetic products from cradle to grave. Students practice 21st century skills, life-cycle thinking skills and present their own arguments.

Learning outcomes

During this module you will:

  • to learn to apply 4 phenomenon-based and student-centered learning examples in your own teaching
  • to learn about designing and planning for more sustainable infrastructures, plastics and cosmetics
  • to learn about an eco-friendly approach to the development of new products, using systems thinking and eco-friendly resources that does not harm the environment.

At the end of this module:

You will get the skills and concrete tools for including and applying four new sustainable development lessons typical to Finland into your own teaching! These lessons work as projects as well.

In order to get your training certificate, you will have to test each lesson plan and send in a workbook you fill in together individually or with your school team. This must include photos of the implementation of the four lesson plans in your school or with your students. The workbook will be a collection of your reflections, insights and photos - you do this for yourself and your teaching.

EduGems lessons are high-quality and research-based combining Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths with Sustainability and 21st Century Skills.

A story-based curriculum

To make the learning process more fun and engaging, and to support children’s motivation and passion for studying, EduGems Finland has created a story-based curriculum where the arctic owl Gem guides the children through a Quest for the ”Gems of Knowledge”. Gem the owl is challenging the children to find out ways to stay sustainable in this changing world of ours. You will meet Gem the Owl in Circular Solutions Module 3 and EcoDesign Module 4.
