What is ESD?

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is still mostly unknown and unused in schools around the world, yet it is a SDG 4.7 and its implementation is urgent! EduGems Finland is an online Learning Academy for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) helping teachers all over the world to transform teaching and learning by combining STEAM and ESD with motivation and confidence!

What are your pedagogical approaches?

The pedagogical approaches at EduGems teacher trainings are context- and research-based. The effectivity of lesson plans behind the teaching activities is supported by the latest research and paradigms about

  • inquiry-based learning,
  • student-centered learning,
  • education for sustainable development,
  • environmental literacy,
  • argumentation in socio-scientific issues,
  • system thinking and study skills,
  • how to influence students motivation to study science
  • how to holistically influence students’ personal, societal and global citizenship skills about sustainable development issues (Juntunen, 2015).

What is STEAM?

The STEAM pedagogy always involves two or more approaches from Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math. This means phenomenal lessons, during which the students take an active role to collaboratively construct new knowledge. The STEAM activities at EduGems courses develop students’ insights into learning to learn and solving real-world problems.

What are 21st century skills?

The 5C's of the 21st Century Skills: Collaboration, Communication, Critical thinking, Creativity and Career readiness. In practice, these means e.g. encouraging the students to ask questions and create arguments in teams, and learning to take thoughtful risks based on one's own learning passions - in relation to sustainable development.

What is SDG 4.7?

Target 4.7: By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development

  • Indicator 4.7.1: Extent to which (i) global citizenship education and (ii) education for sustainable development are mainstreamed in (a) national education policies; (b) curricula; (c) teacher education; and (d) student assessment
